Today I am most thankful for my mother, Brian's mother and all of the things they taught Brian and me when we were kids. They taught us everything they knew (which is a lot!), so we would not have to depend on other people for help as adults. My dad and Brian's taught us all kinds of cool stuff too, but it's the "mom school" lessons that are sticking out most in my memory tonight. Thanks to Mrs. Carpenter and my mother, I know how to clean up after myself (I was amazed that so many girls came to college not knowing how to do their own laundry!), kick a field goal, hit a baseball, climb trees and fences, pick locks, check and change the oil in my car, change a flat tire without calling AAA, shoot a gun and cook dinner for 40 people. Brian has been a single dad since Sally was 9 months old, but thanks to all of our advance training he was able to jump right into doing all of the "baby stuff" all by himself. He's better at pressing Sally's school uniforms and French braiding her hair than I am too, because he's been doing it by himself for so long. When I moved from Texas to Tennessee with my parents in 1991, Mrs. Carpenter and my mom started making and selling Christmas stockings, ornaments and tree skirts to fund quarterly trips back and forth to Texas and to summer camp. They made Brian and me help with the sequins, which is how we learned to sew. I am especially thankful for this skill now, because the profits from the stockings I make and sell go into my animal rescue, Sally's school tuition or towards whatever "obsession" (usually a Hallmark ornament or a hard-to-find VB "dream bag") I'm currently stalking. Brian still helps me with the sequins, and we are teaching Sally the basics so she can help when she's a bit older.

Today I am thankful for the fact that I did not break my toe yesterday morning, and in fact, only cut the end and pushed and bent the toenail back. Word of advice - don't move mini-fridges when barefoot.

Today I'm thankful for Chris. He's shown me that it's okay to love someone and that not all men are evil. I wouldn't be the same without him, or half the baker I've become.

Today I am thankful that it is almost Thanksgiving break and that it's almost Christmas break. They may not be as relaxing as I'd like, but at least it's a break from homework and my part-time job.
