My husband and I are thinking of going in September for our 10 year anniv. Neither of us have ever been so we are total newbies. Any tips? Places we should def see? (besides the typical tourist areas)
It's a little overwhelming!

You need to do a Broadway show if that's something you like! Also what are things you guys enjoy doing? Do like to shop?, like to see museums or want to just do major sight seeing tour spots?

don't eat at chain places when you're there..it's no fun to eat at places you could eat at when you're home! my friends and i ate at this really good cheesecake/bagel place in times square when we were there...I need to check with my friend for the name though because I don't remember!

Well we are trying to figure out somewhere to stay that is affordable & nice. It looks like if we stay in the city it will be in the Pod Hotel, but I'm thinking if we stay in New Jersey it will be cheaper & we can just take the subway into the city. Right?

Also, we want to do all of the touristy stuff (Lady Liberty, Empire State Building, etc) - any other things we should do? Is there some sort of boat that takes you up the river at night? Does that make sense? lol

Crystal..
there is a boat that will take you up and down the river and i believe there is dinner cruises... and there is a boat that takes you around the statue of liberty..
i believe you can stay in Hoboken, NJ and take the path over... but Hoboken is def. a "drinking" area.... lots of bars.. 21st birthday parties... etc.. I would stay in the city though... more for the experience.. less traveling in the mornings
If you like candy, you need to go to Dylans Candy Bar... a multifloor store of just candy..
You must go to a show... i suggest wicked (amazing!) hair, Phantom of the Opera.
You should talk to Kathleen Coffee too, she was just there recently

We always stay at the Belvedere...super close to all the Times Square action, clean, quiet & friendly.
I would eat at: *5 Napkin Burger (best hot wings and great beer selection...also have great sushi & burgers) *Basilica (superb pasta...it's really close to the Belvedere...@ 9th ave i think?) *The Pink Tea Cup (in the village...they have great homemade food...grits, salmon croquettes, fried chicken, mac 'n cheese and great breakfast food, too...it's worth the trip! i believe it's on grove st?) *Lombardi's Pizza (supposedly first pizzeria in USA...great stuff)
We always go to the tickts booth in times square for show tickets...they're cheaper and there's usually a lot of great shows to pick from. Just need to check what time the booth is open.
Shop: *H&M *Century 21 (it's right across from the World Trade Center 9/11 Site...so you can visit that then lighten the mood with discount designer goodness at Century 21...they also had retired VB items for 50% off retail or more last time I was there) *Cute shops called Delphinium and Dephinium Home that are close to 9th (can find their website and check location)...cute, funky local shop *Pearl River Mart (SOHO area)
have fun!!

Well I'm there more often than I should be since I practically live there while at school so I have to at least make some food suggestions! If you are looking for italian food there are 2 options that I always choose between: Carmine's (http://www.carminesnyc.com/index.php) My mom's favorite place to eat in the city. It's all served family style and is so yummy, but it's pricey. The other option is John's Pizzeria (http://www.johnspizzerianyc.com/index2.htm) My favorite place to eat in the city! Amazing brick oven pizza with pretty much whatever you want on it. The best part- the atmosphere. The restaurant is an old church with a huge mural on the wall, stained glass window ceiling, and it's just a very warm inviting place. Both restaurants are located on West 44th (practically across from eachother) right by Times Square. If you're looking for dessert you absolutely have to go to Max Brenners on Broadway(http://www.maxbrenner.com/home.aspx). They have really creative desserts that are sooo delicious! I've tried the chocolate pizza which was on Food Network, but I would suggest trying something like the Fondue Churros. Churros that you dip in chocolate, raspberry sauce and salty caramel- yum! They also have some great hot chocolate that is so rich and delicious. For activities I suggest going to Central Park. It's a great place to just relax and walk around especially in the fall; I don't know how the weather will be, but the row boats are always fun. Also, the Museum of Natural History is on Central Park West- probably my favorite place in the city. If you haven't seen Night at the Museum and you plan on going, watch it before you go! Other than that, I really go into the city to shop! I would suggest some VB retailers, but there really aren't any that do the city justice. The only one I've been to with a decent selection has terrible customer service (so whatever you do stay away from Z Chemists). There are a few boats that will bring you around the Hudson, but I don't know any names off the top of my head. I've been on a dinner cruise which brings you right to the Statue of Liberty, but I don't know the company. I'm sure you could find some companies and reviews online. If you need anymore help, let me know

Oh! And seeing that you're Vegan- if you go to Central Park, go to the south west entrance/exit which is at Columbus Circle. You'll see the Time Warner Center; go inside and take the escalator down into Whole Foods for some lunch! They have a huge selection of premade hot/cold vegetarian/vegan food and a cute little place to sit and have lunch right past the checkout counters.
